THAILANDIA – An initiative of Venetian Caritas

For the benefit of physically-impaired children and of tsunami victims 

By the end of the year, the Angels’ Home will be ready to shelter its young guests: children traumatized by the 2004 tsunami and children with serious handicaps.

The first brick was laid a few weeks ago  in Bangkok, Thailand, during a ceremony attended by Father Dino Pistolato. As a matter of fact, the Venetian Caritas has promoted an assistance project initially aimed at providing relief aid – collected in the Venetian dioceses – to the tsunami-hit areas in the southern part of the country.  Subsequently, funds amounting to a total of 400,000 Euros have been raised to build the Angels’ Home, thanks to the cooperation with the Province of Venice and the Jesolo Townhall. “The Angels’ Home is meant for children traumatized by the tsunami – explains Father Pistolato – but also for the physically-impaired and their parents”. These children will be temporally accommodated in the Angels’ Home and will receive physiotherapist and psychological treatment.  Their parents will learn basic physiotherapy techniques which they will put to use once they will return to their homes. 

The Angels’ Home will be managed by sister Maria Angela Bertelly, a physiotherapist and professional nurse, who is already taking care of the children.

Actually, construction works for this building had already started elsewhere: land was bought and foundations were laid. “However, the Bangkok archbishop, Cardinal Kitbunchu, was not happy with that location and had decided to change the project – explains Father Pistolato. We always work in cooperation with the local communities and have therefore respected the Cardinal’s decision”.
